Temple 18: Onzanji

The temple, Onzanji (Temple of Gratitude Mountain), is one of historic and gender equalizing significance. For many years women were considered impure and as such unable to approach sacred Buddhist places. Kukai put an end to that and lifted the ban from women when his own mother came to this place. It is said that Kukai’s mother’s bones are buried at this site.
