Temple 20: Kakurinji

Do you have your walking shoes on? Good. It is a bit of a trek to get to Kakurinji, the “Temple of Forest Cranes”. But it will be totally worth it. I hope that my shoddy photos of the area do it a little bit of justice and show you how spectacularly beautiful this area is.

It is said that while Kukai came here to establish a temple, an image of the Jizou appeared to him guarded by two cranes. The crane is a symbol of longevity and virtue. The main temple is one of the few that has not been burned, so this is a very unique chance to see a truly ancient Buddhist temple.
