Zenrakuji can be translated as, “The Temple of Complete Joy”. This is one of the temples on the pilgrimage route which had gone through some displacement over time. At the peak of the Shinto purge of Buddhism after the Meiji Restoration, this temple was very damaged as it was located on the same grounds as a Shinto shrine. The contents of the temple were moved temporarily to Temple 29. The matter was resolved in 1942 when the contents were re-established and the previous controversy as to where was the “real Zenrakuji” was put to rest. As a result, this temple is relatively new looking and modernized.
