Temple 50: Hantaji

A lovely, and spread out temple grounds, Hantaji (Temple of Great Wealth) is noted for a particular character who had once trained here. Ippen Shounin, who lived in the 13th century, was known as a wandering monk. Ippen Shounin was not only a scholar but also a fierce fighter. In one account it is recalled that he killed several relatives who had come to murder him. This is quite different from our usual image of monks who travel peacefully about Shikoku, looking for peace and enlightenment. Ippen’s solution to his particular problem is a bit permanent. In my family we just ignore each other on Facebook.

Ippen Shounin may have looked like this when he put his uncles and cousins to the sword.
